The magazine you've been hoping to find welcomes you to:

Merric Davidson (Publisher) Writes...

The New Writer has reached its century with a clip to fine leg; 100 issues old and time to draw breath. My last editorial was penned in 1996 in the twentieth and final issue of Acclaim magazine (Suzanne Ruthven has been the editor of TNW since then) and I wrote this about the coming of The New Writer: “Suzanne’s stewardship will guarantee a lively, informed, reader-friendly publication and an exciting time ahead. (True) It is not only a time for new ideas, but also a time for new writing to be taken more seriously. You don’t have to be a genius to recognise that the world is changing (Idiot savant) and we will react and respond to the challenges ahead. (Big words) The merger of Acclaim and Quartos is therefore one of necessity rather than whim. We believe that TNW had to happen … (Pompous) To produce the best magazine you need the best contributors ... (see listing on this website). Hope you’ll stay with us every step of the way to help us be the best (Great intentions) … and we’ve only just begun! (Big Carpenters fan).

"An amazing achievement, and in the end,it is successful thanks to the quality of their advice, their stories, their poems. It just seems to get on with things, quietly, doing what it says on the tin very well, and has been a great resource for thousands of writers over the years." Vanessa Gebbie ("Words from a Glass Bubble")

"Congratulations on the 100th edition of New Writer. I am deeply appreciative of the help and inspiration I have had from the publication over the years." Jon Haylett ("Black Mongoose")

“There’s been the welcome thud of The New Writer’s arrival on our doormat for so long, followed by my absorption of its varied and stimulating contents, that it’s felt like another member of the family. Often more pleasurable, I have to say!" Sally Spedding ("Prey Silence")

“What a wonderful milestone. 100 issues - where has the time gone! The idea that I wrote for TNW back in 1997 is a sobering concept to reflect upon - but also, conversely, a rather cheering one; at least my amateurish confidence and self-belief weren't quite as misplaced as I privately worried they might be when I was writing it! It goes without saying that being published for the first time in TNW was a pretty thrilling event." Lynne Barrett-Lee ("Out on a Limb")

“Every writer of fiction knows how important and challenging a form the short story is. TNW has been crucial, not only in providing an outstanding outlet for practitioners - and managing to be open to different themes and styles while maintaining a high standard - but also in publishing encouragement and advice. The same applies to its support for poetry. I feel proud and lucky to have been both a subscriber since its inception and also a sometime contributor. Their regular team are doing a wonderful job for writers and deserve our thanks and continued support.” David Evans ("A Touch of the Sun")

"TNW published my first short story. As a journalist I wrote stories every day, but seeing a piece of fiction in print had me smiling from ear to ear. Even more than the thrill, it sustained me during the many rejections that lay ahead before gaining a publishing contract for a novel. Throughout that period, the magazine lay open in my study as a daily reminder, a constant spur ..." Maureen Carter ("Blood Money")

“Amongst magazines, I have a personal fondness for The New Writer, partly because it’s well-produced, contemporary, serious but not forbidding and partly because, though its outlook is far from parochial, it is based in Kent. Writing magazines are, fortunately, well distributed throughout the country and each comes to represent in a small way its own Heimat. We in Kent can be proud of our connection.” Clive Eastwood (Kent & Sussex Poetry Society)

“I've subscribed to The New Writer from the very first issue. Back then, I was just starting out as a writer myself and would scan TNW for competitions I could enter, look enviously at the short stories chosen for publication there, while mine were still thumping depressingly back onto the doormat, and smile at the amusing editorials. Today, as a published novelist and journalist, I still enjoy its insights and the high standard of writing. TNW is quirky, clever, original and accessible. What more do you want?" Jane Wenham-Jones ("Wannabe a Writer?")
