The New Writer

Writers' Guidelines
These guidelines refer to submissions to The New Writer magazine and NOT to entries into our annual Prose & Poetry Prizes.

Articles & Features

We are interested in receiving forward-looking articles on all aspects of the written word that demonstrate the writer's grasp of contemporary writing and current editorial/publishing policies. This may include interviews and personality profiles but we are not looking for introspective pieces on 'Why I Write...' or how to come to terms with writer's block and the rejection slip, biographies or opinion pieces. Articles should be 500-1,000 words although features up to 2,000 words and mini-series would be considered if the idea is submitted initially by letter giving a brief outline.

The 'Vellum' page offers a rare indulgence for the literary-minded by featuring favourites from Marlowe and Pepys to Raymond Chandler and Simon Raven but submissions should concentrate on 'the works of...', rather than 'the life of...'. Payment: £20 per 1,000 words on publication.

Fiction

Short stories from subscribers and prizewinners only. The magazine does not consider unsolicited manuscripts but each issue contains up to four short stories from subscribers and guest writers, limited to a maximum 4,000 words on any theme and in any genre. No multiple submissions. Providing SAE accompanies each script, a tick-sheet is enclosed with the returned story to provide feedback and advice where applicable. Payment: £10 per story payable by credit voucher on publication.

News Items

News of writers' circles, new publications, how-to books, competitions, courses, workshops are included, whenever space permits, free of charge. Maximum words 200. No payment for these items.

Poetry

The New Writer magazine contains a finite number of poems in three of its issues, the fourth consists of winners from its annual competition, the Prose & Poetry Prizes. The poetry editor would like to point out that poems accepted at following times are likely, (but not always) to appear in the following issues: 30th April - 30th June for the Autumn issue; 30th July - 30th September for the Winter issue; 30th October - 31st December for the Spring issue. Payment: £5 per poem payable by credit voucher on publication.

The New Writer will soon publish a selection of poems on this website to accompany each printed issue. Poems are selected using the same criteria as those we print in the magazine but with permanent publication on this website instead of payment. The magazine publishes previously unpublished poems, provided they are original and interesting. No more than five poems should be submitted at any one time. The poetry editor prefers poems which provide a good use of language, offering challenging imagery.

General

All work should be typed, double-spaced (except poetry), on one side of white A4 paper and paperclipped if there is more than one sheet. Since text is transferred by using a scanner, you should ensure that the typescript is the original print-out with clear type and not a photocopy. Brief biographical information can accompany your submission.
